Insurance
Depending on your current health insurance provider or employee benefit plan, it is possible for services to be covered in full or in part. Please contact your provider to verify how your plan compensates you for psychotherapy services.
I’d recommend asking these questions to your insurance provider to help determine your benefits:
- Does my health insurance plan include mental health benefits?
- Do I have a deductible? If so, what is it and have I met it yet?
- Does my plan limit how many sessions per calendar year I can have? If so, what is the limit?
- Do I need written approval from my primary care physician in order for services to be covered?
Pros of Using Insurance for Therapy
- Lower Out-of-Pocket Costs: If your plan covers therapy, your out-of-pocket expenses, such as copays or coinsurance, may be significantly reduced.
- Affordable for Those with Medical Concerns: For clients with ongoing medical issues, therapy becomes more affordable once they reach their deductible.
- Low or No Deductible for In-Network Services: Some insurance plans either have low deductibles or don’t charge deductibles or copays for in-network providers, making therapy more affordable
- Prepaid Insurance: Clients are often already paying for insurance, so using it for therapy services can feel like they are maximizing their benefits
- Support for Long-Term Therapy: Some insurance plans provide coverage for long-term therapy, making consistent treatment affordable over time.
Cons of Using Insurance for Therapy
- High Deductibles: For clients with high deductibles, the cost of therapy may remain high until late in the year when the deductible is met, and then it resets the following year.
- More Paperwork: Clients will face additional paperwork for on-boarding, file claims, receiving approval, and tracking coverage.
- Less Flexibility with Payment Arrangements: Therapists have less control over payment options, flexibility in setting fees, rescheduling, cancelling without penalty, and when to charge as they must adhere to insurance rates and structures.
- Less Control of Treatment Options: Insurance companies use in house auditors to determine eligible diagnosis, treatments plans, and number of sessions. As an example, many insurance companies do not allow for Gottman Intakes as presented by Dr. Gottman.
